Discworld is a setting for the novels of Sir Terry Pratchett; it is a place where dwarfs look askance at trolls, vampires look askance at werewolves, and the citizens of Ankh-Morpork mostly just want to get through one single day without being looked askance at.
You have each found yourself in the worst possible place in Ankh-Morpork, even worse than being in the Shades at midnight with an expensive horse. You have been detained at the pleasure of the Patrician. Wherever you were this evening, you have been plucked from your normal lives by courteous but very firm guards and brought here. Reflecting on your recent behaviour, you can all think of reasons that might have drawn attention, but you never expected it would lead you to the Patrician’s Palace.
Luckily for you, your audience does not end up being with Lord Vetinari himself, but with his secretary, Drumknott. He explains, officiously,* that the Patrician has decided that, in order to expunge the stain of your recent misdeeds, you must give back to the city. Your particular form of community service can take one of two forms: either you must accept appointment to the organising committee of the Soul Cake Duck Festival, or you must accept appointment to the next life. If the Soul Cake Duck Festival doesn’t go well, you can expect a transfer to your fallback choice.
